Agave (BGC)

We went and had a late lunch at the Agave Mexican Cantina at the BGC this past Friday. It was around 2:00 pm, so we pretty much had the place to ourselves (except for the two or three groups of people that were already inside).

We ordered the Taco Salad with Grilled Chicken for starters (you can ask them for beef instead of chicken with your salad). There was a good amount of meat in it, along with the greens and other crunchy vegetables. The salad had a light, tangy taste to it; just right to whet your appetite without making you feel full before the main course. I was a bit surprised by how spicy the honey vinaigrette was; maybe it was just me. It did give the salad a nice kick. And it was also a nice dip for the taco shell the salad came in (yes, the "bowl" is edible too).

We also had the Yukatan Skewers. The plate comes with 3 sticks of grilled meats. I'm not sure if they allow you to order an all beef/shrimp/chicken platter, but we had all three in our order so we could sample more flavors. It looks kind of like a shish kebab, and the taste doesn't differ much either. We started to wonder why Mexican food seems to feature a lot of cumin-y flavors in it, just like the food from the Mediterranean area. It even came with a creamy dressing, just like a kebab place would serve. I really liked the beef and shrimp. I just love the way the beef was done, and the shrimp wasn't overcooked. All this on top of some Mexican style rice, which sort of reminds me of how a traditional paella would taste, just drier and tastier.

Our last order was a Naked Burrito. This is just a burrito served without the tortilla wrapping. A last minute decision to have it done "wet" resulted in extra cheese and salsa added on top. Oh, and we chose the steak burrito, because we just looove beef. The steak was really nice; we had it cooked medium well and it was juicy and tender. The rice, beans, salsa, lettuce, and everything else all made it a hefty meal.

Including the lemonade I ordered, this set us back about 1,300 Php. But given the portions and the flavors you'll get, we'd recommend you try the place out too. It's a great alternative to the usual eats people go for, and it's a really nice way to experience "south of the border" flavors.
